Keeping the true techno vibe alive, that’s what Double U Jay is all about. He was immediately fascinated by this versatile genre. It intrigued him how techno can be powerful, deep, soulful, funky, pumping, driving, melodic, dark.... all at the same time. This diversity is also easily spotted in his sets, combining housy Detroit sounds with funky tribal and hardgroove. A wide selection of tracks combined with old school skills (3 deck mixing, effects, juggling, scratching,...) make up for an energetic live performance.
First spotted by the Pro-Jekt crew in 2006, he earned a spot in the Koloso Club (ex-Cherrymoon). He was the only young talent to play there alongside numerous techno legends. In 2007 other concepts such as Liberty White, Energize, Mekanik and Londenbeat showed interest, concepts which still support what he is doing today. The year 2008 brought some major gigs to the ever growing list of references. Evolutionz (NYE 07-08), Bassleader, Laundry Day and the dream of every techno deejay, I Love Techno. Double U Jay was selected by Dave Clarke to open his Red Room at this legendary event. Dave Clarke picked him out of all the contestants of the White Noise contest, stating that “his mix told a story and he deserved it”. At the age of 22, he had already fulfilled one of his dreams and this encourages him even more to keep on going. 2009 was a year filled with gigs all over Belgium and a few in the Netherlands and allowed him to get more experience and develop a real feel for live performance. Deejaying is one thing, feeling a crowd and interacting another. Some of the highlights were Londenbeat, Laundry Day and playing on the I Love Techno Truck at the City Parade.
Next to deejaying, he is also organising events. His own concept ‘BASIK’ is growing and the tenth edition will take place in the fall of 2010. The collaboration with Michael Sense feels natural since they share a vision: providing techno for the Belgian technoheads. This goal is also pursued when they sit together in the studio. Expect some first BASIK grooves and Double U Jay solo tracks during one of his sets in the near future!
Although his taste in electronic music has broadened and his notion of the ‘genre’ and concept techno has changed, his main goal remains the same. Respecting the true techno vibe - quality electronic music that unites people, entertain them as a dj but educate them at the same time.
